Several Russian companies were surprised to see themselves on The Weinstein Co.’s creditor list, published by Epiq Bankruptcy Solutions. Among the Russian companies listed as TWC's creditors were major distributors Central Partnership, owned by the natural gas giant Gazprom, Paradiz and Volga. None of these companies were able to explain their landing on the creditor list as their relations with TWC were limited to distributing movies that the New York-based studio released in the United States and say they could not possibly be owed anything. "We bought movies [from TWC]," Gevorg Nersisyan, head of Paradiz, was quoted as saying by the Russian business daily Kommersant. "Unfortunately, the Weinsteins don't owe us anything." Volga recently distributed Paddington 2, a TWC film that was sold to Warner Bros. shortly before its U.S. release. The Russian culture ministry's attempt to delay the release stirred up a huge controversy here two months ago. Meanwhile, the situation could be different for Timur Bekmambetov's Russian company Bazelevs, as it produced the TWC the period drama The Current War, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Bazelevs declined to comment, but the two companies are likely to have outstanding issues as The Current War was never released.
